Your Website Is Live — Now What? A Website Maintenance Guide for Businesses

Published October 27, 2026 5 min read

Short answer: a live website still needs maintenance. At a minimum, five things should run routinely: backups, security updates, uptime monitoring, SSL and domain renewal, and content updates. Most of these can be automated; the rest only need periodic checks.

Why does a website need maintenance?

A website runs on software — the server, framework, and supporting libraries — that keeps receiving updates, including security fixes. A site that is never updated becomes more vulnerable over time.

Some things also expire. Domains and SSL certificates must be renewed. Miss a renewal and your site may stop loading or show a "not secure" warning in the browser — right when a potential customer is looking for you.

What to check and how often

Task Frequency
File & database backups Daily, automated
Uptime monitoring (whether the site loads) Continuous, automated
Server & framework security updates When released; check at least monthly
SSL certificate Auto-renewed, checked monthly
Domain renewal Yearly — turn on auto-renewal
Contact form & WhatsApp button Monthly
Content: prices, opening hours, address, phone number Whenever something changes
Speed & mobile layout Every few months

Backups: make sure they can be restored

A backup is only useful if it can be restored. Keep copies in a location separate from the main server, and occasionally test a restore to confirm the data is intact. If your site has an admin panel or database (such as a product catalog), database backups matter as much as file backups.

Uptime monitoring: know before your customers do

A site can go down because of server issues, an expired domain, or a mistake after a change. Uptime monitoring checks your site regularly and sends an alert as soon as it cannot be reached, so problems can be fixed before many visitors are affected.

Outdated content is a problem too

A secure site that shows old prices, wrong opening hours, or an inactive WhatsApp number still costs you. Visitors who find incorrect information tend to hesitate before getting in touch. Make updating your website part of your routine whenever something in your business changes.

Signs a website is poorly maintained

  • The browser shows a "not secure" or expired certificate warning.
  • The contact form does not send, or messages never arrive.
  • Pages feel slow or look broken on mobile.
  • The information on the site no longer matches your business.
  • Nobody knows when the last backup was made.

Do it yourself or hand it to a provider?

You can make simple content updates yourself if your site has an admin panel. For the technical side — security updates, backups, server monitoring — many business owners prefer to hand it to a provider so they can focus on running the business. What matters is that it is clear who is responsible for each task in the table above.

Frequently asked questions

If my website content rarely changes, does it still need maintenance?

Yes. Even if the content stays the same, the software behind it still receives security updates, and the domain and SSL still need to be renewed.

What happens if I forget to renew my domain?

The website and any email on that domain stop working. If the registrar's grace period also passes, the domain name can be released and registered by someone else. Turning on auto-renewal is the easiest way to prevent this.

How often should backups be made?

For most business websites, automated daily backups are enough. Sites whose data changes often, such as online stores, may need more frequent backups.
