Short answer: to show up on Google Maps and in local search, you need (1) a complete, verified Google Business Profile, (2) a website that clearly explains your services and location, (3) consistent business details everywhere, and (4) a steady flow of customer reviews. Together, this is called local SEO.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is how you make your business easy to find for people near you — for example when someone types "motorcycle repair near me", "dentist in Tangerang", or "catering BSD" into Google.
For searches like these, Google usually shows a map with a few top businesses before the regular website results. That map is where most of the clicks go — and you don't have to be the biggest business to appear there.
How does Google decide which businesses to show?
According to Google itself, local results are based on three things:
- Relevance — how well your business profile matches what was searched.
- Distance — how close your business is to the searcher or to the location named in the search.
- Prominence — how well known your business is, based on reviews, links, articles, and the quality of your website.
You can't change distance. You can improve relevance and prominence — and that's what the steps below are for.
1. Complete your Google Business Profile
Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free profile that appears on Google Maps and in search. Make sure you:
- Verify the profile, so Google trusts that your business is real.
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add supporting categories.
- Fill in your opening hours, phone number, service area, and website correctly.
- Upload real photos of your premises, products, and team — not just your logo.
- Write a description that naturally mentions your main services and city.
2. Build a website that explains your services and location
Your Google Business Profile links to your website, and Google takes that website into account. A website that helps local SEO:
- Shows your business name, address, and phone number clearly, for example in the contact section and footer.
- Has a page for each main service, so Google knows exactly what you offer.
- Mentions your city or service area naturally in page titles and content, without overdoing it.
- Uses structured data (schema.org LocalBusiness) to tell search engines your name, address, opening hours, and contact details in a machine-readable format.
- Is fast and mobile-friendly, because most local searches happen on phones.
3. Keep your business details consistent (NAP)
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. Google trusts businesses whose details match everywhere: your website, Google Business Profile, social media, marketplaces, and business directories.
Avoid small inconsistencies, such as a different spelling of your street in different places, or an old phone number that was never updated.
4. Collect and reply to reviews
Reviews are one of the most visible prominence signals — for Google and for potential customers.
- Ask happy customers for a review — send your review link directly via WhatsApp after a sale.
- Reply to every review, including negative ones, politely and with a solution.
- Never buy fake reviews. Google can remove them and penalize your profile.
5. Stay active
Profiles and websites that are rarely updated look less trustworthy. Upload new photos, update your hours for holidays, use posts in Google Business Profile for promotions, and add new articles or information to your website regularly.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a website if I already have a Google Business Profile?
You should have one. A Google Business Profile only holds brief information, while a website explains your services, prices, and strengths in full. Google also considers your website when judging how well known your business is.
Can a business without a physical store appear on Google Maps?
Yes. Businesses that serve customers at their location — such as AC repair or handyman services — can set a service area and hide their home address.
How long until I see results?
Changes to your Google Business Profile can show up within days, but ranking improvements usually take a few weeks to a few months, depending on the competition in your area.
