Short answer: to appear in AI answers, make sure (1) AI engines are allowed and able to read your website, (2) your business information is clear and consistent everywhere, and (3) your website has content that answers real customer questions. This practice is called GEO — Generative Engine Optimization.
What is GEO, and how is it different from SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) aims to get your website into Google's list of results. GEO aims to get your business mentioned or cited directly inside answers written by AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Perplexity.
The two work together. Many AI engines pull information from search engine indexes — ChatGPT Search, for example, uses Bing's index — so a website with solid SEO already has a strong head start on GEO.
1. Let AI engines read your website
AI engines send "crawlers" (reading robots) such as GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended. If these crawlers are blocked — through your robots.txt file or firewall settings such as Cloudflare — your website will never be cited.
Check two things:
- Your website's
robots.txtdoes not block AI crawlers. - Your security or CDN settings do not block AI bots automatically.
2. Build a website machines can read easily
AI understands pages more easily when they:
- Are server-side rendered (SSR), so the text is readable without running JavaScript.
- Include structured data (schema.org/JSON-LD) describing who you are, your services, pricing, and contact details.
- Provide llms.txt — a plain-text summary of the website written specifically for AI engines.
3. Keep your business identity consistent everywhere
AI "trusts" information that appears the same across many sources. Keep your business name, description, website address, phone number, and services identical on:
- Your own website
- Google Business Profile
- LinkedIn, Instagram, and other social media
- Business directories
Link them both ways: your website links to your social profiles, and your social profiles link back to your website.
4. Write content that answers questions
People ask AI in full sentences: "How much does a website cost?", "What's the difference between a company profile and an online store?". The content cited most often:
- Answers directly in the first paragraph, then explains the details.
- Uses question-style headings and a Q&A (FAQ) section.
- Contains specific facts — numbers, prices, steps, comparisons — not generic marketing lines.
- Is updated regularly, because AI tends to prefer recent information.
5. Submit your website to search engines
Register your website with Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, then submit your sitemap. For Bing and other search engines, use IndexNow so every new page is known immediately instead of waiting.
Frequently asked questions
How long until my business appears in AI answers?
Usually a few weeks to a few months. The website needs to be indexed first, and then AI engines need enough evidence that your business is relevant and trustworthy.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. GEO builds on SEO. A fast, well-structured, well-indexed website is the foundation for both.
Can a small website be cited by AI?
Yes. AI picks the source that answers the question most clearly, not just the biggest one. Specific, honest content often wins.
